Here's Looking at You, Angel
"Healing the divide. One ship at a time."
A Good Omens Post-Season 2 story inspired by Casablanca.
After Beelzebub and Gabriel ran away to the stars, more angels and demons are defecting from the upcoming war to join them. The Ritz is in the neutral zone between Heaven and Hell and one of the last stopping points for those seeking refuge in Alpha Centauri. Crowley does his best to manage the restaurant, the new guests, and a curse that keeps him isolated and heartbroken under dozens of empty bottles of Talisker every night as Muriel plays Nightingale for him on the piano. Until one day his angel returns with a young man who looks familiarâŚ
Here at the crossroads of duty and desire stand an angel and demon, a Second Coming, and a second chance to make things right.
Coming in September to an AO3 near you, brought to you by @do-it-with-style-events #SilverScreenBang!

Ineffable May, Day 28: Bureaucracy
Rated Teen for non-graphic spicy tension. Inspired by this delightful bit of fanart by @bea-n-art.
Mr. Brown landed in a heap, cracking his shoulder on the coldest, dampest floor heâd ever encountered. Somewhere, behind the pain and terror of the last several seconds, he thought that if any floor needed a carpet it was this one.
âName?â There was a bored voice above him. It came from behind the rickety metal office desk that loomed over his prone form. It took a moment, but he was able to prop himself up into a sitting position. The room around him was as dank as the floor. A lone fluorescent bulb above provided sickly, flickering light. Dirty water dripped down filthy, windowless walls. Was that a poster advising the reader not to lick them? He shuddered at the thought.
âWhere am I?â Mr. Brown grabbed onto the edge of the desk and hauled himself up to standing. His shoulder protested, and he grimaced.
âWhere do you think? You see any pearly gates? Your dear old grandma floating around on a silver cloud, playing a harp?â The figure seated at the desk had distinguished graying hair swept back from his face. He wore a dusty black jacket, and was flanked by messily stacked boxes of documents. He gestured to their surroundings, indicating the lack of clouds of any color. Mr. Brown wondered what his grandmother had to do with anything. Heâd just gone to visit her last weekend, and she seemed to be in the peak of health.
âNow, if you would be so kind. Name.â The man picked up a clipboard, apparently preparing to write Mr. Brown's moniker on the paper attached to it. He brought up the tip of a sharpened pencil and opened his mouth to lick it. A forked tongue longer than anything Mr. Brown had ever seen on another human flicked out and twirled around the wood and graphite. He almost couldnât believe what his eyes were telling him. It was grotesque, and yet ⌠there was a flutter of something in Mr. Brownâs belly. It wasnât revulsion.
The unearthly tongue slipped back into the manâs mouth. His only acknowledgment of Mr. Brownâs stunned expression was to raise his eyebrows in a âyou getting the picture now?â movement. Mr. Brown swallowed. Hard. The room titled around him. He swayed forward, catching himself on the lip of the desk.
âIâm in Hell, arenât I?â
âDing ding, give the man a prize!â The fiendish office worker smirked. âOh wait, there arenât any prizes here. It being Hell and all.â Mr. Brown barely heard the words. His thoughts were spinning. How did he end up here? His confusion must have shown, because the smirk faded from the manâs - no, he must be a devil? demon? - face.
âLook, it can come as a bit of a shock to some. You die, and suddenly you find out that the books just didn't balance in your favor. But, we canât do anything about it now, can we? So, if youâll give me your name, weâll have you sorted and sent on to your eternal reward that much quicker.â
âBut, Iâm not dead!â Mr. Brown sputtered. He struggled to remember how he had gotten here. The last few hours were a bit fuzzy. He ticked off the events of the evening on his fingers. âI was at a meeting, in Mr. Fellâs bookshop. But there was dancing, I think? Which I thought was highly unconducive to discussing this yearâs Christmas light display, let me tell you. Some vandals threw a brick through the window. Mr. Fell and his friend tried to talk to them. But there really is no reasoning with hooligans, so I offered to call the proper authorities. And thenâŚâ Mr. Brown faltered. After that there were only flashes of memory. Had he flown through the air? Been tossed down a stairwell? Surely not.
âDid you just say bookshop?â The demon stood up, the force of it sliding his chair. Mr. Brown took a step back. The flash of dark emotion from the other man - demon, whatever - made his breath quicken. Was it fear? Not quite⌠Oh, wait, he hadnât answered.
âEr, yes? Do you know it?â Mr. Brown cringed inside. What a ridiculous question. Why would a resident of the underworld know about a bookshop in London?
âOh, yes. Iâm quite familiar with it. Tell me,â The demon leaned forward over the desk. Mr. Brown felt himself wanting to match the motion, to close the gap between them. What was going on? He couldnât remember the last time heâd been so affected by someone elseâs mere proximity.
âWas Mr. Fellâs friend,â that word was sneered, âa tall bloke? Red hair? Dark glasses? Moves like he forgot to install his bones?â The strange turn of phrase about bones aside, that was an accurate description of Mr. Fellâs dance partner. Mr. Brown nodded, utterly at a loss as to how the demon would know that.
âUgh, Shax! You didnât tell me there would be humans there!â There was a thump of a fist on the abandoned clipboard, then a finger pointed at Mr. Brown. âAnd you say youâre not dead?â Before he could answer, the demon rounded the desk. He caught Mr. Brownâs forearm in one hand and pressed two fingers to the inside of his wrist. The grip was firm, but not rough, and it sent a ripple of shivers up Mr. Brownâs arm. He felt his heart skip a beat.
âThereâs a pulse, alright. Youâre alive.â All the frustrated bluster seemed to leave the demon. He sighed and released the arm. Mr. Brown could still feel a tingle where fingers had touched his skin. âWhat am I supposed to do with you? There arenât exactly forms for this sort of situation. I canât intake living humans.â The demonâs eyes roamed Mr. Brownâs face, as if he would find the answer to his question there. This close, Mr. Brown could see that they were a striking shade of blue. The memory of that long, forked tongue flashed across his mind. He tried to stop it, but his body knew exactly what it wanted this infernal stranger to do with him.
The demon must have picked up on the subtle change in Mr. Brownâs stance. Or, maybe his pupils had dilated? Whatever it was, it surprised him. Eyebrows were raised again, this time accompanied by a bit of a smile.
âWell, whoever you are, it looks like youâre going to be here for a while. At least until we can locate the proper paperwork to have you sent back topside, anyway. In the meantime, perhaps thereâs something I can do to make you more...â The demon took a step forward. Mr. Brown didnât back away. The smile widened. âComfortable?â

A Good Omens Tangled AU poster for the Ineffable Poster Event held on Twitter and Instagram! I'm super proud of how this turned out even though I'm probably scraping the deadline by mere HOURS đ
[ID 1/3: A digital illustration of a Tangled x Good Omens AU poster. Aziraphale is in the middle as Rapunzel, Crowley off to the left as Eugene, and a dark colored unicorn named Bentley as Maximus. The sword Maximus usually has in his mouth is replaced with canon Aziraphale's flaming sword. The gold title at the bottom is replaced with "Good Omens" instead of "Tangled".
[ID 2/3: Same as before except Bentley's sword isn't on fire.
[ID: 3/3: The original Tangled Poster. /End ID]

Love your blog! I was wondering if youâve read Paulâs PR guyâs diaries? They are full of little gems, such as how Paul uses smileys and is very handy with his iPhone. I read this entry and the guy writes Paul lost âa soulmate and songwriterâ. I think itâs quite telling that the people he works with call John his soulmate. Havenât read all the guyâs entries yet but just wanted to mention this one; itâs the entry about the Freshen Up tour in Japan 2018.
Hey there! Iâm so incredibly sorry for taking so long to reply, but life has been truly hectic!Â
To answer your question, I hadnât had the chance to go through Stuart Bellâs accounts of the Japanese leg of the Freshen Up Tour (2018), so Iâm grateful youâve brought this to my attention! He certainly offers a different insight into the inner workings of the tour and how a more than experienced Paul navigates the commotion still with youthful enthusiasm. Even if written with a bit of a âPR hat onâ, an amassing of âinsiderâ POVs (from people who were actually there) is invaluable to getting the full picture of Paul McCartney. And as someone who is filled with love every time a new facet is revealed, I appreciate any piece of information that comes my way! Â
So I have to agree with you that little anecdotes like these are hidden gems:
The devotion and adoration is incredible and as Paulâs car rolls by this afternoon, the faithful are rewarded as Paul winds down the window and waves. He is so touched, and awed, by the reception that he even shoots some footage as he rolls past the fans. (Later in the week I receive a text from Paul while I am out for a run and it contains the clip. It looks mega so I ask if I can post to his social media â shortly afterwards I receive a smile face. A little-known fact about Paul â he is the master of emojis when text messaging!Â
â Wednesday 31st October â Tokyo Dome, For Whom The Bell Tells: Japan 2018.
And then, we have this other entry, that I agree is rather interesting: not only does it give us an âinsiderâs perspective on Johnâs significance in Paulâs life, but the piece centres on the issue of art as a platform with the power to spread a message, social responsibility, and how the message is something oneâs passionate about (Paul being described as ânot shying away from wearing his heart on his sleeveâ just tickles me):
It barely needs mentioning that music is a huge and central part of Paulâs life but he has never been detached from the wider world. Like many musicians, matters of the heart are a preoccupation in his song-writing but Paul has continued to express his thoughts on life, the world in general and the causes close to his heart through his songs, interviews and other interventions. You can look back to the controversy surrounding his debut single with Wings, 'Give Ireland Back To The Irishâ (a response to the âBloody Sundayâ killings only a few weeks earlier in 1972), as an example of how he does not shy away from wearing his heart on his sleeve. Paul is passionate about many things and his humanity is self-evident. For a man who lost a soulmate and song-writing partner, you can imagine how the horrors of gun violence are an issue close to his heart. Just days ago the world was sickened by the mass shooting in a synagogue in Pittsburgh and so Paul has been keen to make his views known by not only showing his disgust at the attack which left 11 dead but also calling on the US to do the right thing by using their votes in the upcoming election to elect politicians who will do something about it. As Iâm on my way to the venue Paul calls me and asks us to release a message in response to the terrible events. Â He gives me a quote over the phone and in a rather surreal moment as we chat, I find myself looking out of the car window to see giant posters of Paul across the city with huge welcome messages for him.
âThursday 1st November â Tokyo Dome, For Whom The Bell Tells: Japan 2018.
But letâs address the bit about his relationship with John.Â
Like you, I find very telling the choice of words used here. It just goes to show how themselves and everyone around them have to scramble for a term that adequately describes the ineffability of their connection. It felt so encompassing, that the terms that regularly pop up hold that indescribable aspect in themselves: special, magical, cosmic soulmates. And seeing them struggle to put it into words is one of my favourite things! Itâs no surprise then that I have an inordinate amount of overlapping tags covering the numerous nuances of this very same feeling, tracking their various attempts at capturing it.
But for me, itâs even more fascinating to look beyond the external awe-inducing aspect of it  â this special, magical, cosmic glow that draws us to the relationship in the first place  â and see how this notion felt to them; how it impacted the relationship in the first place.
Letâs look from Paulâs perspective first, as it is here, by a matter of the circumstances, that we find more material.
We wrote our first songs together, we grew up together and we lived our lives together. And when weâd do it together, something special would happen. Thereâd be that little magic spark.
â Paul McCartney, in Bill Harryâs The Paul McCartney Encyclopedia (2003).Â
We read each other. Weâd grown up together! (âŚ) Weâd been teenagers together, Iâd been sitting in his bedroom listening to Fats Domino, Chuck Berry, weâd been taking down the words together when we were like 16/17. So weâve actually grown up together. So that, if he said: âGotta be like Chuck Berry!â I knew what record he meant. I knew even what line he was talking about! You know? So, we read each other in that respect.
â Paul McCartney, interview for the Today Show (6 July 1997).
With John and I, it was so special, I think both of us knew we couldnât get that again. And itâs proved itself, through time, to be as special as it felt when we were doing it. So I donât think that could happen again. We really were a complete fluke â just two kids who happened to meet up in Liverpool and share an interest and start writing songs together. And then developed, organically, together. And had the same sense of humour. And learned things at the same rate. Found out about Vietnam together. Little things. All of these little awarenesses pretty much hit us at the same time over a period of years. And you really become soulmates when that happens.
â Paul McCartney, interview w/ Mark Binelli for Rolling Stone: Sir Paul rides again. (October 20th, 2005)
No matter whatâs happened, even though Johnâs dead, I donât feel like we are ever gonna be apart. I think weâre a part of each otherâs lives, weâre a part of each otherâs karma, man!
He was a lovely guy, you know. And it gets sadder and sadder to be saying âwasâ. Nearer to when he died I couldnât believe I was saying âwasâ, but now I do believe Iâm saying âwasâ. Iâve resisted it. Iâve tried to pretend he didnât get killed⌠itâs a bit sad. But anyway, I was blessed to be in The Beatles, to work with John. Something, somewhere⌠you know they talk about a gift of songwriting, well that was a pretty cool gift whoever gave it me.
â Paul McCartney, interview w/ Mat Snow for MOJO (November, 1995).
Paul seems to take a causality approach, with a bit of occasional baffling at the mysterious workings of fate sprinkled in. In typical Macca fashion, he condenses in himself the apparently paradoxical views of people as pavers of their own paths â we became soulmates because of the circumstances, because we chose to spend all that time together â and people as participants in a big cosmic play â we were brought together in the first place by something, somewhere, blessed to be a part of each otherâs lives, each otherâs karma.
But overall, it is very important to realise that despite attributing the initial circumstances to chance or a higher-power â them meeting at that particular moment and clicking so well immediately â Paul seems to value shared time, space and experiences as some of the biggest factors behind the magic.Â
They became soulmates, by virtue of growing up and living their lives together.Â
This places the agency and the responsibility of making it work right in their own hands. You want to be that close, that attuned, that in-sync with the other to the point of feeling like you can read each otherâs minds? Right, you have to actually spend the time together, to accrue shared references and memories that will end up developing into that unspoken language. You canât expect to have been born on this planet inherently capable of communicating with your preordained soulmate.Â
And that brings us to John.Â
John is awesome because despite having all those overpowering emotions and traumas inside him, he wasnât actually afraid of engaging in some introspection and facing those feelings head-on. Because of this, he was able of evolving much faster (or at least, even when he couldnât always change his actions, he seemed willing to try and become self-aware enough to understand why he was acting that way in the first place).Â
So letâs see, after 40 years of getting to know himself, what answers did Johnny reach:
John: Well, youâre asking why we met. I mean, I donât know. Itâs like asking why you were born. I can give you theories of karmic pasts and things like that, but Iâve no idea why. But why it continues is because we want it to continue and work to continue. There seem to be certain cycles that relationships go through. The critical points are at different parts of the different cycles. The new way of talking is like, âWell, why work on a relationship? We just stop and get another one.â But the karmic joke is, presuming youâre lucky enough to find a new relationship anywhere near the relationship youâre giving up â or exchanging, or walking away from, or destroying by inattention or inadvertence of selfishness, or whatever it is â that you have to go through it over and over and over again right up until youâre seventy. People never grasp the fact that theyâre going to have to go through the same thing again. They get to the sort of five-year stretch or the seven-year itch or whatever these tension points are, that seem to be organic, built in, like the tide coming in and going out. Itâs like every time the tide goes out, you quitâyou move your house of something, Iâm not making it clear here but you get where Iâm goingâŚ
Sheff: Yes, yes, but what made you see that?
John: When [Yoko] kicked me out, I saw I was kicked out. When I was kicked out, I realised where I was, which was on a raft in the middle of the universe, and whatever happened, presuming I could have started another relationship, I would have ended up in the same placeâif I was lucky. And thatâs a big if.
Sheff: Youâre speaking about your separation in the early Seventies.
John: Seventy-three, or whenever we were separated, which is sort of a very cold way of saying it. It took a while, but thatâs what I saw. If I was lucky⌠Itâs like what they say about karma. If you donât get it right in this lifetime, you have to come back and go through it again. Well, those laws that are sort of cosmically talked about â accepted or not, but talked about apply down to the most minute detail of life, too. Itâs like âInstant Karma,â which is my way of saying it, right? Itâs not just some big cosmic thing, although itâs that as well, but itâs also the small things, like your life here and your relationship with the person you want to live with and be with. There are laws governing that relationship, too. You can either give up halfway up the hill and say, âI donât want to climb the mountain, itâs too tough, Iâm going to go back to the bottom and start again,â or you can do it this time.
Sheff: But you once decided it was too tough.
John: I did. But I didnât see any of this then. Yoko and I were lucky enough to go through that and come back and pick up where we left off, although it took us some kind of effort and energy to â to blend in again and get in the same sync again. It took some time.
â John Lennon, interview w/ David Sheff for Playboy. (September, 1980)
It is with great love and affection that I see Johnâs matured insights: that despite having met under cosmically mysterious circumstances, the choice to build it into something more is in your hands.Â
âWhy it continues is because we want it to continue and work to continue.â
But John, like Paul, seems to have only gained this wisdom with the benefit of time and experience. It was with the perspective afforded by the passage of years that Paul came to fully realise and appreciate how truly special and improbably âperfect for each otherâ they were. And John âtook his lucky breakâ and realised how hard it was to âfind a new relationship anywhere near the relationship youâre giving up â or exchanging, or walking away from, or destroying by inattention or inadvertence of selfishnessâ.
(As an aside, I canât help but point out how John pretty much disclosed what, in his opinion, made the mountain called JohnandPaul too difficult to climb: his selfishness and Paulâs inattention.)
In the same interview and continuing the reflections on the cyclic nature of relationships started above, and just what he lost by giving it up:
John: In a marriage, or a love affair â when the seven-year-itch or the twelve-year or whatever these things that you have to go through â there comes a point where the marriage collapses because they canât face that reality, and they go seeking what they thought they should be having, still, somewhere else. I get a new girl, itâll all be like that again; I get a new boy⌠But for all marriages, all couples, itâll all be the same again. But what you lose is what you put into that⌠relationship. The early stuff â the Hard Dayâs Night period, I call it â the early period, was the early equiâ seâ what Iâm â what Iâm equating it to is the sexual equivalent of the beginning of a relationship, of people in love. And the Sgt. Pepper-Abbey Road period was the period of maturity in the relationship. And maybe had we gone on together, maybe something more interesting would have come out of it. It would not have been the same. It would have been a different thing. But maybe it wouldnât either. Maybe it was a marriage that had to end. Some marriages donât get through that â that phase. Itâs hard to speculate about what would have been.
â John Lennon, interview w/ David Sheff for Playboy. (September, 1980)
So, John acknowledges how you risk losing a very special relationship and everything youâve put into it by walking away when it goes through a cyclic tough phase, how he did it once but he âdidnât see any of this thenâ.Â
But what didnât he see back then? Was he too careless and flippant about what they had, not appreciating how unique it was?Â
No.Â
John was, even back then, very much aware that this thing with Paul was special. And that, if anything, made it worse. Because now there were (perhaps unconscious) unmeetable expectations weighing down on his belief in the genuineness of the relationship.Â
If they are cosmically connected, then they should be able to communicate wordlessly, âshare in each otherâs mindsâ; if they can read each otherâs minds, they should know the otherâs every want and need; so if Paul is not innately responding to his wants and needs, he is either actively ignoring Johnâs suffering (because Paul doesnât really care about him or, perhaps, because he actually derives pleasure from seeing John down); or Paul canât actually feel Johnâs pain intrinsically in the first place, and that would mean that everything that John believed about the specialness of the relationship and the relationship itself was a lie.Â
And boy, faulty communication sure is one of the fatal flaws in their dynamic! All because there was the assumption that they were so in-tune that they didnât need to talk! There seemed to be the expectation that everything would flow seamlessly. And if it wasnât flowing, if anything required a bit of personal input to work it out, then it wasnât genuine and spontaneous any more. And if the relationship wasnât real, it wasnât worth climbing the mountain for. It shouldnât be a climb at all, but rather an effortless glide, hand-in-hand, through the universe!
John: Because we have plenty of arguments, but weâre also so attuned to each other, and we know each other so well, through the years, that an argument never reaches a climax. Or it never reaches the point where somebody goes off âcause theyâre done talking, you know.
Q: In other words, itâs forgotten.
John: Itâs not forgotten. But we know each other so well, itâs like sort of mind-reading. If an argumentâs building up between Ringo and I, say, there comes to a point where we know whatâs coming next and itâs all â everybody packs in. Or something â some, âOkay, he wins,â you know. So we have ordinary arguments, like other people, but we donât â thereâs no sort of conflict. All the people who have conflict in show business either get married about nineteen times, they leave the group theyâre in and go solo⌠and nothing ever happens.
â Interview w/ Larry Kane (2 September 1964).
Hindle: What do you think about language?JOHN: I think itâs a bit crummy, you know? It is a drag form of communication, really. Weâll get â weâll get telepathy. I believe that.Hindle: You believe that?JOHN: Yeah, sure. Sure. Sure as anything I believe. Itâs too⌠Because now we need it so much. [âŚ]  But itâs hard⌠itâs that bit, you know. There are â thereâs people everywhere of the same mind and itâs just⌠even amongst ourselves we canât communicate. Which is the hard bit, you know. Hindle: Yeah.JOHN: Amongst the people that sort of really agree. And my language is thatâHindle: Unless you fall in love itâs impossible to communicate like that. JOHN: I mean, I wasnât in love last year, but I was communicating quite well with people. Not as well, or maybe not as powerfully. âCause now thereâs two of us, doing that, brrmmm, whatever it is. Sending out a vibration or whatever. But before it was me and⌠or me and George, alright, or whatever it was; we werenât in love, but. You know. Thereâs enough in you to shove it out. It is just that bit. If you â if somebody comes in a room and heâs uptight and that, he can make the whole room uptight.
â John Lennon, interview w/ Maurice Hindle (December 1968).
Itâs sort of complicated but sometimes you say things, but itâs not really what you meant to say. If I say something to you and you hear it different from what Iâve said it, and you answer back and weâre not really getting down to it. Iâm really talking like that you know. Like somebody says âdo you want ice cream?â and Iâll say no, and actually I meant yes. You find yourself saying the opposite of what you mean. This happens to me quite a lot. I speak a lot, but what I say is not always what I mean.
â John Lennon, when talking about I Know (I Know) (1973).
Laverdiere: [The Family Way soundtrack] was actually the first time you would officially compose outside the Lennon-McCartney tandem.
Paul: Yes, and you know, itâs funny. Thatâs true. Itâs funny because talking to Yoko recently, you know, you talk about all these things that happen way back in history. It turns out John was not pleased; but I didnât know âtil a year ago that he wasnât pleased. He always told me, âFine.â âCause heâd been acting in a film â he did a film called How I Won The War â so we started to do little solo thing, just for a change, just for a break, and so I assumed, I asked him, âIs it okay with you?â He said, âYeah, fine, fine.â
But Yoko told me that he was actually a little bit put off by that, because he hoped probably that I would say Lennon-McCartney will write this together. But to me it seemed a good opportunity to get away of what I did normally. But Yoko just told me apparently John was a little bit hurt about that. Which is sad. But we did actually talk about it. He just never told me at that time. He probably just covered up.
âPaul McCartney, interview w/ Michel Laverdière. (May 23rd, 1995)
âRigbyââs, um, his first verse, and the rest of the verses are basically mine. But the way he did it was â uh, was he had the song, and he knew heâd got the song. So rather than ask me, âJohn, do these lyricsââ Because by that period, he didnât want to say that â to me. Okay? So what he would say was, âHey, you guys, finish off the lyrics,â while he was sort of fiddling around with the track or something, or â or arranging it, in the other part of the giant studio in EMI.
Now, I sat there with Mal Evans, a road manager who was a telephone installer, and Neil Aspinall, who was a not-completed student accountant who became our road manager. And I was insulted and hurt that heâd thrown it out in the air, but I wanted to grab a piece of it, and I wrote it with them sitting at the table. So. There might be a version that they contributed, but there isnât a line in there that they put in.
But thatâs how it â [Paul] just sort ofâ âCause thatâs the kind of insensitivity he would have â which made me upset in the later years â because to him, that meant nothing. But thatâs the kind of person he is. So he threw âem out and said, âHere, finish these up,â like â to anybody, who was around. [By saying that] actually he meant I was to do it, but â you know, Neil and Mal were sitting there, andâŚ

John: We donât really write together any more. We havenât written together for two years. Not really. Just occasional bits we help⌠somebodyâs got to use a line or two.
Miles: How does that affect you when youâre playing then?
John: It doesnât make any odds, who writes them. Itâs when The Beatles perform that makes it into Beatle music. Itâs a long time since weâve sat down and written together for many reasons, because we used to write together mainly on tour. Then there was a valid reason for it. It got false â âCome round to my house and weâll write some songsâ â it doesnât work anymore.
âJohn Lennon, interview w/ Barry Miles, (partially) unpublished. (September 23rd, 1969)
But in the early days of performing, whether it was Hamburg or Liverpool, when we were still playing dance halls, there was still a lot of inspirational energy. We hadnât started repeating our little movements, our little licks. So in that respect, the Beatlesâ live creativity had gone long before they came to America. And in the same respect, the creativity of songwriting had left Paul and me⌠well by the mid-Sixties it had become a craft.
And yet⌠a different kind of thing comes in. Itâs like a love affair. When you first meet, you can have the hots twenty-four hours a day for each other. But after fifteen or twenty years, a different kind of sexual and intellectual relationship develops, right? Itâs still love, but itâs different. So thereâs that kind of difference in creativity too. As in a love affair, two creative people can destroy themselves trying to recapture that youthful spirit, at twenty-one or twenty-four, of creating without even being aware of how itâs happening. One takes to drugs, to drinks, to knock oneself outâŚ
â John Lennon, interview w/ David Sheff for Playboy. (September, 1980)
I was really going through the âWhatâs it all about?â type thing â this songwriting is nothing, itâs pointless, and Iâm no good, Iâm not talented, and Iâm shitty, and I couldnât do anything but be a Beatle. What am I going to do about it? It lasted nearly two years and I was still in it during Pepper. I know Paul wasnât at the time; he was feeling full of confidence, and I was going through murder during those periods.
âJohn Lennon, interview w/ Barry Miles, (partially) unpublished. (September 23rd, 1969)Â
You can get a picture of how this expectation of implicit understanding between them when mixed with the insecurity in the otherâs love they harboured, bred a lot of hurtsâŚÂ
It takes two to tango, of course. I wonât really get into how Paulâs avoidance of his own feelings and implicit expectation that John would know how much he meant to him, without Paul having to look those emotions in the eye for too long or make himself vulnerable by saying them out loud, had a part to play in this. I have touched upon this in other posts and hope to go deeper in the future, but this has run away from me as it is!
It makes me happy that, even if only in retrospect, their approach to this special, magical, cosmic connection they shared evolved from the naive view that the relationship had to carry itself own the back of its own merits, to the more mature understanding that it continues because they want it to continue and work to continue. As John put it: Love is a flower and you have to water it.
Once again, thank you so much for the ask, and forgive me for losing myself completely down this rather angsty rabbit-hole⌠But feel free to explore the tags for more appreciations of the magical quality of Lennon/McCartney!

FEAST OF THE ANNUNCIATION
March 25 Today is the Feast of the Annunciation.
Hail, Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
Adapted from The Liturgical Year by Abbot Gueranger
This is a great day, not only to man, but even to God Himself; for it is the anniversary of the most solemn event that time has ever witnessed. On this day, the Divine Word, by Whom the Father created the world, was made Flesh in the womb of the Virgin Mary, and dwelt among us. We must spend it in joy. Whilst we adore the Son of God Who humbled Himself by thus becoming Man, let us give thanks to the Father, Who so loved the world, as to give His only-begotten Son; let us give thanks to the Holy Ghost, Whose almighty power achieves this great mystery. We are usually in the midst of Lent on this Feast, and yet the ineffable joys of Christmas are upon us; our Emmanuel is conceived on this day, and, nine months hence, will be born in Bethlehem, and the angels will invite us to come and adore the sweet Babe.
During Septuagesima week, we meditated upon the fall of our first parents, and the triple sentence pronounced by God against the serpent, the woman, and Adam. Our hearts were filled with fear as we reflected on the divine malediction, the effects of which are to be felt by all generations, even to the end of the world. But in the midst of the anathemas then pronounced against us, a promise was made to us by our God; it was a promise of salvation, and it enkindled hope within us. In pronouncing sentence against the serpent, God said that his head should one day be crushed, and that, too, by a woman.
The time has come for the fulfillment of this promise. The world has been in expectation for 4,000 years; and the hope of its deliverance has been kept up, in spite of all its crimes. During this time, God has made use of miracles, prophecies, and types, as a renewal of the engagement He has entered into with mankind. The blood of the Messias has passed from Adam to Noe; from Sem to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob; from David and Solomon to Joachim; and now it flows in the veins of Mary, Joachim's daughter. Mary is the woman by whom is to be taken from our race the curse that lies upon it. God has decreed that She should be Immaculate; and has thereby set an irreconcilable enmity between Her and the serpent. She, a daughter of Eve, is to repair all the injury done by Her mother's fall; She is to raise up Her sex from the degradation into which it has been cast; She is to cooperate, directly and really, in the victory which the Son of God is about to gain over His and our enemy.
A tradition, which has come down from the apostolic ages, tells us that the great mystery of the Incarnation was achieved on the 25th of March. It was at the hour of midnight, when the Most Holy Virgin was alone and absorbed in prayer, that the Archangel Gabriel appeared before Her, and asked Her, in the name of the Blessed Trinity, to consent to become the Mother of God. Let us assist, in spirit, at this wonderful interview between the Angel and the Virgin: and, at the same time, let us think of that other interview which took place between Eve and the serpent. A holy bishop and martyr of the 2nd century, St. Irenaeus, who had received the tradition from the very disciples of the Apostles, shows us that Nazareth is the counterpart of Eden.
In the garden of delights there is a virgin and an angel; and a conversation takes place between them. At Nazareth a Virgin is also addressed by an Angel, and She answers him; but the angel of the earthly paradise is a spirit of darkness, and he of Nazareth is a spirit of light. In both instances it is the angel that has the first word. âWhy,â said the serpent to Eve, âhath God commanded you, that you should not eat of every tree of paradise?â His question implies impatience and a solicitation to evil; he had contempt for the frail creature to whom he addresses it, but he hates the image of God which is upon her.
See, on the other hand, the Angel of light; see with what composure and peace he approaches the Virgin of Nazareth, the new Eve; and how respectfully he bows himself down before Her: âHail, full of grace! The Lord is with Thee! Blessed art Thou among women!â Such language is evidently of Heaven: none but an angel could speak thus to Mary.
Eve imprudently listens to the tempter's words; she answers him; she enters into conversation with one that dares to ask her to question the justice of God's commands. Her curiosity urges her on. She has no mistrust in the serpent; this leads her to mistrust her Creator.
Mary hears what Gabriel has spoken to Her; but this most prudent Virgin is silent. She is surprised at the praise given Her by the Angel. The purest and humblest of virgins has a dread of flattery; and the heavenly messenger receives no reply from Her, until he has fully explained his mission by these words: âFear not, Mary, for Thou hast found grace with God. Behold, Thou shalt conceive in Thy womb, and shalt bring forth a Son: and Thou shalt call His name Jesus. He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God shall give unto Him the throne of David His father: and He shall reign in the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there shall be no end.â
What magnificent promises are these, which are made to Her in the name of God! What higher glory could She, a daughter of Juda, desire, knowing, as She does, that the fortunate Mother of the Messias is to be the object of the greatest veneration? And yet it tempts her not. She has forever consecrated Her virginity to God, in order that She may be the more closely united to Him by love. The grandest possible privilege, if it is to be on the condition of violating this sacred vow, would be less than nothing in her estimation. She thus answers the Angel: âHow shall this be done, for I know not man?â
The first Eve evinces no such prudence or disinterestedness. No sooner has the wicked spirit assured her that she may break the commandment of her Divine Benefactor and not die; that the fruit of her disobedience will be a wonderful knowledge, which will put her on an equality with God Himself: than she immediately yields; she is conquered. Her self-love has made her at once forget both duty and gratitude: she is delighted at the thought of being freed from the twofold tie which binds her to her Creator.
Such is the woman that caused our perdition. But how different is She that was to save us! Eve cares not for her posterity; she looks but to her own interest: Mary forgets Herself to think only of Her God, and of the claims He has to Her service. The Angel, charmed with this sublime fidelity, thus answers the question put to him by Mary, and reveals to Her the designs of God: âThe Holy Ghost shall come upon Thee, and the power of the Most High shall overshadow Thee. And therefore also the Holy One which shall be born of Thee shall be called the Son of God. And behold Thy cousin Elizabeth, she also hath conceived a son in her old age; and this is the sixth month with her that is called barren; because no word shall be impossible with God.â This said, he is silent, and reverently awaits the answer of the Virgin of Nazareth.
Let us look once more at the virgin of Eden. Scarcely has the wicked spirit finished speaking than Eve casts a longing look at the forbidden fruit: she is impatient to enjoy the independence it is to bring her. She rashly stretches forth her hand; she plucks the fruit; she eats it, and death takes possession of her: death of the soul, for sin extinguishes the light of life; and death of the body, which, being separated from the source of immortality, becomes an object of shame and horror, and finally crumbles into dust.
But let us turn away our eyes from this sad spectacle, and fix them on Nazareth. Mary has heard the Angel's explanation of the mystery; the will of Heaven is made known to Her, and how grand an honor it is to bring upon Her! She, the humble Maid of Nazareth, is to have the ineffable happiness of becoming the Mother of God, and yet the treasure of Her virginity is to be left to Her! Mary bows down before this Sovereign Will, and says to the heavenly messenger: âBehold the handmaid of the Lord: be it done to me according to thy word.â
Thus, as the great St. Irenaeus and so many of the holy Fathers remark, the obedience of the second Eve repaired the disobedience of the first: for no sooner does the Virgin of Nazareth speak her fiat, âbe it done,â than the Eternal Son of God (Who, according to the divine decree, awaited this word) is present, by the operation of the Holy Ghost, in the chaste womb of Mary, and there He begins His human life. A Virgin is a Mother, and Mother of God; and it is this Virgin's consenting to the Divine Will that has made Her conceive by the power of the Holy Ghost. This sublime mystery puts between the Eternal Word and a mere woman the relations of Son and Mother; it gives to the almighty God a means whereby He may, in a manner worthy of His majesty, triumph over Satan, who hitherto seemed to be prevailing against the divine plan.
Never was there a more entire or humiliating defeat than that which this day befell Satan. The frail creature, over whom he had so easily triumphed at the beginning of the world, now rises and crushes his proud head. Eve conquers in Mary. God would not choose man for the instrument of His vengeance; the humiliation of Satan would not have been great enough; and therefore she who was the first prey of hell, the first victim of the tempter, is selected to give battle to the enemy. The result of so glorious a triumph is that Mary is to be superior not only to the rebel angels, but to the whole human race, yea, to all the angels of Heaven. Seated on Her exalted throne, She, the Mother of God, is to be Queen of all creation. Satan, in the depths of the abyss, will eternally bewail his having dared to direct his first attack against the Woman, for God has now so gloriously avenged Her; and in Heaven, the very Cherubim and Seraphim reverently look up to Mary, and deem themselves honored when She smiles upon them, or employs them in the execution of any of Her wishes, for She is the Mother of their God.
Therefore is it that we, the children of Adam, who have been snatched by Mary's obedience from the power of Hell, solemnize this day of the Annunciation. Well may we say of Mary those words of Debbora in her song of victory over the enemies of God's people: âThe valiant men ceased, and rested in Israel, until Debbora arose, a mother arose in Israel. The Lord chose new wars, and He Himself overthrew the gates of the enemiesâ (Judges 5: 7-8). Let us also refer to the Holy Mother of Jesus these words of Judith, who by her victory over the enemy was another type of Mary: âPraise ye the Lord our God, Who hath not forsaken them that hope in Him. And by me, His handmaid, He hath fulfilled His mercy, which he promised to the House of Israel; and He hath killed the enemy of His people by my hand this night⌠The almighty Lord hath struck him, and hath delivered him into the hands of a woman, and hath slain himâ (Judith 13: 17-18; 16:7). SERMONS FOR CHILDREN'S MASSES: THE ANNUNCIATION BY REV. RAPHAEL FRASSINETTI, 1900
Gospel. Luke i. 26-38. And in the sixth month, the Angel Gabriel was sent from God into a city of Galilee, called Nazareth, to a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David, and the virgin's name was Mary. And the angel being come in, said unto her: Hail, full of grace: the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women. Who having heard, was troubled at his saying, and thought with herself what manner of salutation this should be. And the angel said to her: Fear not, Mary, for thou hast found grace with God. Behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and shalt bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus. He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God shall give unto Him the throne of David his father: and He shall reign in the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there shall be no end. And Mary said to the angel: How shall this be done, because I know not man? And the angel answering, said to her: The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Most High shall overshadow thee. And therefore also the Holy which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God. And behold thy cousin Elizabeth, she also hath conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her that is called barren: because no word shall be impossible with God. And Mary said: Behold the handmaid of the Lord, be it done to me according to thy word.
On this day the archangel Gabriel, by God's command, descended from heaven to the little city of Nazareth, to Mary, in order to announce to her the near coming of the Redeemer of the world. The angel entered her little room, and making a reverential bow, said, âHail, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women.â No doubt the humble virgin felt great perturbation at this sudden apparition. She was disturbed at the appearance of the angel, who came under the form of a comely youth, and also at the singular announcement. St. John Chrysostom says that Mary manifested great virtues on this occasion, for she heard the salutation with blushes, and instead of breaking out into unbecoming joy, she appeared, in her humility, much concerned at the speech. In truth, what greater praise could the angel have given her than the words âThou art full of graceâ? That fulness of grace supposed that she was free from all sin; a fulness of grace which presupposed the practice and possession of every virtue, by which Mary had become so acceptable to God. That fulness of grace indicated that she was more privileged than the angels and saints. No wonder that she was so full of grace, because the Lord was with her, and she was the privileged woman of her sex. All generations shall call her blessed.
The angel saw the maiden's trouble, and to reassure her, he said, âFear not, Mary, for thou hast found favor with God. Behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and shalt bring forth a son, and thou shalt call His name Jesus. He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God shall give unto Him the throne of David his father: and He shall reign in the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there shall be no end.â What does the Virgin answer to this announcement? âHow shall I become the mother of this great man, when I have consecrated my virginity to God?â The angel answered, âThe Holy Ghost shall come upon thee and the power of the Most High shall overshadow thee, and therefore also the Holy which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God. Nothing is impossible to God; for thy cousin, St. Elizabeth, hath conceived in her old age.â Understand, O Mary, that thou shalt not conceive by the power of a man but by the power of the Holy Ghost. The angel waits for thy answer; we too, poor creatures, await your consent, which will be the beginning of our redemption. On thy word depends the consolation of the miserable, the freedom of slaves, the liberation from the sentence of eternal death; in short, the salvation of all the children of Adam. Then the Virgin answered. âBehold the handmaid of the Lord, be it done to me according to thy word.â Then was the word made flesh and dwelt among us. The angel joyfully spread his golden wings and hastened to announce to the inhabitants of paradise the happy news, that this glorious Virgin had consented; that already the incarnation had taken place.
O Mary, I fall down at thy feet, and thank thee from the bottom of my heart for that consent. I salute thee as the Mother of my Redeemer, Jesus Christ; not only do I salute thee as the Mother of Jesus, but as my Mother also. St. Francis de Sales exclaimed: âHow happy I am! My Mother, the most holy Virgin, loves me as her child!â Have not we, my dear young friends, great reason to rejoice, because we have so good a mother, one so rich, and so loving, who is all powerful with her divine Son? Mary becomes the dispenser of all graces, and some theologians say that God confers no favors on us except by the hands of the Blessed Virgin. Mary is the vessel of graces, and she gives them out with generosity to all. The benefits we have received, and they are as numerous as the sands on the seashore, all have come to us through Mary. The younger Father Segneri says, âAs for me, when I consider the graces which I have received from Mary, let me openly state to the glory of my dear Mother, that I am like one of those churches, where all the walls are covered with votive tablets on which I read, âFor graces received, for graces received.' So also, everywhere in my body and soul I find inscribed, âby graces received, I am well and strong; by graces received, I have been baptized and preserved in the service of God.'â
You, my dear young friends, have the same story to tell. Health, life, good parents, good education, good companions and teachersâall these blessings come to you from Mary.
Let us then with a loud voice praise the Madonna, honor her as well as we can, think of her often, call her by the endearing name of Mother, love her with a tender affection. St. Stanislaus Kostka was once asked how he loved the Blessed Virgin. âHow can I answer this question?â he asked. âShe is my Mother, and what more can I say?â If you, too, say with a like affection, she is my Mother and that is why I love her, she on her part will look upon you as her dear child and she will love you with a constant love; she will defend you against the enemies of your salvation, she will cover you with her mantle, she will bestow on you her choicest blessings and will bring you safely to heaven.
Father Alphonsus Salmeron, a devout client of Mary, often repeated on his death-bed, â To paradise, to paradise! blessed be the hour in which I have served Mary; blessed are the sermons which I have heard in thy honor, O Mary; blessed be the work I have done for thee!â If you have loved Mary, your Mother, with a true heart, you will also confidently repeat the same words, âTo paradise, to paradise! blessed be the hour in which I have honored Mary!â (6)
Homily on the Annunciation to the Holy Virgin Mary By St. Gregory Thaumaturgus (a.k.a. Gregory of Neocaesarea), A.D. 213 â ca. 270 (excerpt)
Today are strains of praise sung joyfully by the choir of angels, and the light of the advent of Christ shines brightly upon the faithful. Today is the glad springtime to us, and Christ the Sun of righteousness has beamed with clear light around us, and has illumined the minds of the faithful. Today is Adam made anew, and moves in the choir of angels, having winged his way to heaven. Today is the whole circle of the earth filled with joy, since the sojourn of the Holy Spirit has been realized to men.
Today the grace of God and the hope of the unseen shine through all wonders transcending imagination, and make the mystery that was kept hid from eternity plainly discernible to us.
Today are woven the chaplets of never-fading virtue.
Today, God, willing to crown the sacred heads of those whose pleasure is to hearken to Him, and who delight in His festivals, invites the lovers of unswerving faith as His called and His heirs; and the heavenly kingdom is urgent to summon those who mind celestial things to join the divine service of the incorporeal choirs.
Today is fulfilled the word of David, âLet the heavens rejoice, and let the earth be glad. The fields shall be joyful, and all the trees of the wood before the Lord, because He cometh.â David thus made mention of the trees; and the Lord's forerunner also spoke of them as trees âthat should bring forth fruits meet for repentance,â or rather for the coming of the Lord. But our Lord Jesus Christ promises perpetual gladness to all those who believe on Him. For He says, âI will see you, and ye shall rejoice; and your joy no man taketh from you.â
Today is the illustrious and ineffable mystery of Christians, who have willingly set their hope like a seal upon Christ, plainly declared to us.
Today did Gabriel, who stands by God, come to the pure virgin, bearing to her the glad annunciation, âHail, thou that art highly favoured! And she cast in her mind what manner of salutation this might be. And the angel immediately proceeded to say, The Lord is with thee: fear not, Mary; for thou hast found favour with God. Behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call His name Jesus. He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God shall give unto Him the throne of His father David, and He shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever: and of His kingdom there shall be no end. Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man? â Shall I still remain a virgin? is the honour of virginity not then lost by me? And while she was yet in perplexity as to these things, the angel placed shortly before her the summary of his whole message, and said to the pure virgin, âThe Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee; therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.â For what it is, that also shall it be called by all means.
Meekly, then, did grace make election of the pure Mary alone out of all generations. For she proved herself prudent truly in all things; neither has any woman been born like her in all generations. She was not like the primeval virgin Eve, who, keeping holiday alone in paradise, with thoughtless mind, unguardedly hearkened to the word of the serpent, the author of all evil, and thus became depraved in the thoughts of her mind; and through her that deceiver, discharging his poison and refusing death with it, brought it into the whole world; and in virtue of this has arisen all the trouble of the saints.
But in the holy Virgin alone is the fall of that (first mother) repaired. Yet was not this holy one competent to receive the gift until she had first learned who it was that sent it, and what the gift was, and who it was that conveyed it. While the holy one pondered these things in perplexity with herself, she says to the angel, âWhence hast thou brought to us the blessing in such wise? Out of what treasure-stores is the pearl of the word despatched to us? Whence has the gift acquired its purpose toward us? From heaven art thou come, yet thou walkest upon earth! Thou dost exhibit the form of man, and (yet) thou art glorious with dazzling light.â
These things the holy one considered with herself, and the archangel solved the difficulty expressed in such reasonings by saying to her: âThe Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee. Therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God. And fear not, Mary; for I am not come to overpower thee with fear, but to repel the subject of fear. Fear not, Mary, for thou hast found favour with God. Question not grace by the standard of nature. For grace does not endure to pass under the laws of nature. Thou knowest, O Mary, things kept hid from the patriarchs and prophets. Thou hast learned, O virgin, things which were kept concealed till now from the angels. Thou hast heard, O purest one, things of which even the choir of inspired men was never deemed worthy. Moses, and David, and Isaiah, and Daniel, and all the prophets, prophesied of Him; but the manner they knew not. Yet thou alone, O purest virgin, art now made the recipient of things of which all these were kept in ignorance, and thou dost learn the origin of them. For where the Holy Spirit is, there are all things readily ordered. Where divine grace is present, all things are found possible with God. The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall; overshadow thee. Therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.â And if He is the Son of God, then is He also God, of one form with the Father, and co-eternal; in Him the Father possesses all manifestation; He is His image in the person, and through His reflection the Father's glory shines forth. And as from the ever-flowing fountain the streams proceed, so also from this ever-flowing and ever-living fountain does the light of the world proceed, the perennial and the true, namely Christ our God. For it is of this that the prophets have preached: âThe streams of the river make glad the city of God.âAnd not one city only, but all cities; for even as it makes glad one city, so does it also the whole world.
Appropriately, therefore, did the angel say to Mary the holy virgin first of all, âHail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee; âinasmuch as with her was laid up the full treasure of grace. For of all generations she alone has risen as a virgin pure in body and in spirit; and she alone bears Him who bears all things on His word. Nor is it only the beauty of this holy one in body that calls forth our admiration, but also the innate virtue of her soul. Wherefore also the angels addressed her first with the salutation, âHail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee, and no spouse of earth; âHe Himself is with thee who is the Lord of sanctification, the Father of purity, the Author of incorruption, and the Bestower of liberty, the Curator of salvation, and the Steward and Provider of the true peace, who out of the virgin earth made man, and out of man's side formed Eve in addition. Even this Lord is with thee, and on the other hand also is of thee. Come, therefore, beloved brethren, and let us take up the angelic strain, and to the utmost of our ability return the due meed of praise, saying, âHail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee!â For it is thine truly to rejoice, seeing that the grace of God, as he knows, has chosen to dwell with thee-the Lord of glory dwelling with the handmaiden; âHe that is fairer than the children of men â with the fair virgin; He who sanctifies all things with the undefiled. God is with thee, and with thee also is the perfect man in whom dwells the whole fulness of the Godhead. Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the fountain of the light that lightens all who believe upon Him! Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the rising of the rational Sun, and the undefiled flower of Life! Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the mead of sweet savour! Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the ever-blooming vine, that makes glad the souls of those who honour thee? Hail, thou that art highly favoured!-the soil that, all untilled, bears bounteous fruit: for thou hast brought forth in accordance with the law of nature indeed, as it goes with us, and by the set time of practice, and yet in a way beyond nature, or rather above nature, by reason that God the Word from above took His abode in thee, and formed the new Adam in thy holy womb, and inasmuch as the Holy Ghost gave the power of conception to the holy virgin; and the reality of His body was assumed from her body. And just as the pearl comes of the two natures, namely lightning and water, the occult signs of the sea; so also our Lord Jesus Christ proceeds, without fusion and without mutation, from the pure, and chaste, and undefiled, and holy Virgin Mary; perfect in divinity and perfect in humanity, in all things equal to the Father, and in all things consubstantial with us, apart from sin.
Most of the holy fathers, and patriarchs, and prophets desired to see Him, and to be eye-witnesses of Him, but did not attaint hereto. And some of them by visions beheld Him in type, and darkly; others, again, were privileged to hear the divine voice through the medium of the cloud, and were favoured with sights of holy angels; but to Mary the pure virgin alone did the archangel Gabriel manifest himself luminously, bringing her the glad address, âHail, thou that art highly favoured!â
And thus she received the word, and in the due time of the fulfilment according to the body's course she brought forth the priceless pearl. Come, then, ye too, dearly beloved, and let us chant the melody which has been taught us by the inspired harp of David, and say, âArise, O Lord, into Thy rest; Thou, and the ark of Thy sanctuary.â For the holy Virgin is in truth an ark, wrought with gold both within and without, that has received the whole treasury of the sanctuary. âArise, O Lord, into Thy rest.â Arise, O Lord, out of the bosom of the Father, in order that Thou mayest raise up the fallen race of the first-formed man. Setting these things forth, David in prophecy said to the rod that was to spring from himself, and to sprout into the flower of that beauteous fruit, âHearken, O daughter, and see, and incline thine ear, and forget thine own people and thy father's house; so shall the King greatly desire thy beauty: for He is the Lord thy God, and thou shalt worship Him.â Hearken, O daughter, to the things which were prophesied beforetime of thee, in order that thou mayest also behold the things themselves with the eyes of understanding. Hearken to me while I announce things beforehand to thee, and hearken to the archangel who declares expressly to thee the perfect mysteries.
